What is Neurodynamics (NDS)?
Michael Shacklock, DipPhysio, MAppSc, FACP proposed the concept of neurodynamics in 1995 with his paper in the British journal Physiotherapy in which various scientific cornerstones formed a key aspect of clinical practice in physiotherapy and physical therapy neurodynamics practice. It was a dynamic shift in how we as clinicians approach care for nerves.
This has been developed on in his book Clinical Neurodynamics, 2005, Elsevier, Oxford in which the whole body is dealt with in diagnosis and treatment of many musculoskeletal syndromes with a neural component.
Dr. Perkins was privileged to be invited to one of the very first courses on it in the USA in Portland, OR.
So how does Neurodynamics (NDS) work?
Nerve entrapment occurs when a nerve is compressed or pinched, leading to disruption in its normal function. This can occur in areas where nerves pass through narrow spaces, such as tunnels formed by bones, muscles, or ligaments.
When a nerve is entrapped, it may result in symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the areas served by that nerve.
Common examples of nerve entrapment conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, where the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, and sciatica, where the sciatic nerve is impinged in the lower back. Another common one we work with is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, where an entrapment occurs in the pectoral or clavicular region.
These conditions can arise from various factors, including repetitive motions, poor posture, injury, or anatomical variations. Effective treatment for nerve entrapment focuses on relieving the pressure on the affected nerve, restoring its function, and reducing associated pain, ultimately improving the patient's mobility and quality of life.
