What is Perineural Injection Therapy?
For years, doctors have used what is called Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT), previously known as Neural Prolotherapy (NPT), as a way to treat chronic pain due to an injured sensory nerve that is not responsive to other treatments. PIT is a highly effective treatment for unresolved pain when combined with chiropractic care, physical rehabilitation program, and class IV laser all of which enhance efficacy of the procedure.
We use PIT to treat injuries resulting from the following issues:
- Overuse
- Strains
- Sprains
- Surgery
- Previous trauma
What does it do?
PIT does not treat the symptoms. Instead, it helps correct the underlying problem. It is a great alternative to common pain management treatments such as cortisone shots or invasive surgery. PIT involves making an accurate diagnosis of the cause of pain to ensure that treatment is appropriate and necessary.
Procedure includes superficial injections using a 5% buffered dextrose solution that targets pain receptors located on cutaneous nerves with every treatment aiming to extinguish the pain. Typical treatment course is 6 to 10 sessions performed weekly with pain usually resolving by the 10th treatment. Recurrence is unlikely unless the area is re-injured.
Common acute and chronic conditions treated with PIT include, but not limited to:
- Trigger points
- Headaches
- Shoulder impingement syndrome
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Patellofemoral Syndrome
- Achilles Tendonitis
- Chondromalacia
- Back pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- IT Band Syndrome
"Amazingly effective therapy!
I've had lower back/neck neuromuscular problems for years and I've tried a lot of different treatments ( including dry needling acupuncture from several different practitioners), mostly with little success, so I'm quite a skeptic about new methods. I visited Dr. Elena during a trip with lots of travel time, which often aggravates my problems, and was really amazed at how much better my low back and neck felt the day after treatment. I had two more long flights plus hours of car time and still felt great afterwards. Normally I would hurt for days."
